Mental Health

  • We live in a country where if you break your arm, everyone runs over to sign your cast, but if you tell people you're depressed, everyone runs the other way. That's the stigma. That's pure ignorance. And that ignorance has created a world that doesn't understand mental health.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

According to a Wall Street Journal report in 2016, millennial Indians spend far more time at work than their counterparts in 25 other countries – 52 hours a week on average. In such a scenario, job insecurity, challenging projects, ambitious targets, tough deadlines, heavy performance pressures and the much-dreaded appraisals can all lead to elevated stress levels.

A negative working environment can lead to a variety of mental concerns. Inversely, mental health issues can have an extremely adverse effect on one’s productivity at work. Either way, companies lose time and money.

Each day so many people suffer from different mental illnesses, and so many people suffer and struggle in silence. Mental illness is still rather taboo to talk about, its a conversation topic you want to avoid and not talk about your own struggles, instead pretend everything is fine. In such a scenario, a digitalised solution could be the answer, with which an individual could interact without the fear of judgement and in the comfort of their own homes.

  • Individuals working in the corporate sector, between ages 20-35 would be the target group of this project.

  • The target audience of our app is the corporate sector. While interacting with the people of this sector, we got a variety of responses. Below is one such experience which highlights the need of our app: “It’s almost been four years and I have always been embarrassed and scared to admit I have been suffering from serve anxiety and depression, not only because of the stigma that goes around with the word DEPRESSION, but most importantly because of always being told that ‘IT’S JUST A PHASE’. Perhaps, this could have been just a phase, but this awful phase has put me in situations I never wished and chose to be in. Anxiety attacks, restlessness, trouble sleeping and nervous breakdowns were all parts of this ‘PHASE’. I was always made to believe there was nothing wrong with me, but I knew.”

A large number of people feel similarly but are afraid to speak up because of the stigma associated with mental health. They would want a solution that enables them to communicate freely without the fear of judgement. Thus, a need for a platform, where people can freely communicate their thoughts and feelings without the fear of being judged, arises.

The following features would be beneficial to our ideal user: A chat bot which intelligently assesses your mood and responds accordingly. Through this, we ensure that there is always someone to listen to you in the form of a virtual companion. Apart from this, we also have a feature that enables users to get professional help. There would be a page providing the details of these professionals along with recommendations by the other users of the app. Additionally, the app tracks the sleep cycle of the user and provides sleep inducing features to improve their quality of sleep.

To conclude, the app provides a holistic experience to the user which would ultimately improve their overall quality of life, both at home and in the workplace.
