FOOD WASTAGE – A COMMON BUT UNDISCUSSED ISSUE

  • Food is the primary source of survival for human beings and all other living organisms on this planet. Despite its importance, we see food being wasted here and there and even most of us don't practice efficient eating techniques. We throw away waste food items in the open which makes the area look and feel filthy.

    Also, gradually the soil and air get polluted after the waste starts rotting. Such a situation attracts dogs and other stray animals creating a ruckus. They also act as a breeding place for disease causing agents.

    So, we see food wastage and disposal has so many hassles. However, there are ways to amend it like rest of everything. Food that is to be thrown away in the garbage can be used to feed the impoverished and the stray animals.

    As per a report around 67 million tonnes of food is wasted in India alone every year which has been roughly valued at 92000 crores rupees which is enough to feed an average Indian state for a year. As per the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, one third of total food produced is wasted costing the world economy about $750 billion.

     

  • Basically everyone acts as a contributor towards food wastage starting from hotels to households.

    The impoverished people, stray animals, people living around the dump yards etc.
