During crop production phase, farmers closely monitors crops because of various crop insects pests and diseases. They are the biggest threat to successful crop production. Depending on crop type and growth stage, it is estimated that early pest detection can reduce yield loss up to 40 percent. Therefore, farmers need to put all their efforts to protect the crop from pests as early as possible. Identification of pests and diseases on crops is usually done at the last stage and ultimately the crops are destroyed in the end. This leads to the rate of farmers attempting suicides increasing due to crop failures,debt, depression and family responsibilities .Also because of crop failure,the product prices in market increases gradually due to high demand and low crop production, it becomes difficult for ordinary man to buy products at high price.
What if the pests attacking on crops can be detected at a very initial stage. This can be achieved through various tools such as sensors. Early detection of the pests in crops is a challenging task for farmers these days. Different approaches are used to deal with this problem. Manual techniques are used for pest detection and monitoring in fields. To monitor the wide crop fields manually is highly time consuming and require a lot of efforts, ultimately it's considered less efficient. It also requires availability of experts for minimum 10-12 hours, so it becomes a very costly activity.
Our idea is to make the whole monitoring process and detection of pests in crop fields automatic. Currently, when farmers produce crops in fields, as a preventive measure they spray pesticides in bulk in a fixed time period which is not only harmful for the crops but also harmful for the environment.
By automating the whole process of monitoring and detection of pests in crops, farmers will be able to spend their precious time on other activities as they will not be required to monitor the crop field for the whole day. Therefore, our solution will reduce the monitoring time for farmers.
After studying the current scenario, we have reached at a point of solution to use image processing and classification techniques to identify the diseases or pests in leaves of crops. There will be image capturing wireless device and that device will share the captured image to the base station. After that, at the base station image background will be cropped except the pests on leaves. Using the classification model the machine will identify the density of pests in leaves of crops.
